The Nigerian Navy has intercepted and rescued three suspected stowaways aboard a commercial vessel off the Lagos coastline, reinforcing ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The operation involved the merchant ship MSC STELLA and was carried out near the Lagos Fairway Buoy by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT.
According to a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the mission followed credible intelligence received from the Western Regional Control Centre.
He disclosed that a Quick Response Team was deployed from Tarkwa Bay at approximately 5:05 p.m. on April 19, leading to the successful rescue of the suspects about five nautical miles offshore.
Preliminary findings revealed that the individuals had illegally boarded the vessel in the early hours of April 17 while it was docked at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.
The suspects were identified as Aguru Michael, a 27-year-old citizen of Benin Republic; Soye Monday, 25, from Ondo State; and Kentobou Peter, 22, from Delta State.
Investigators believe the trio intended to travel undetected to Europe through illegal migration routes.
The Navy stated that the interception highlights its continued commitment to combating maritime crimes, including stowaway incidents and irregular migration.
Folorunsho also referenced recent operations, including the rescue of victims involved in a maritime collision in Bayelsa and the interception of foreign stowaways aboard MT ANATOLIA earlier in March 2026.
He confirmed that the rescued individuals are currently in custody at NNS BEECROFT, where investigations and administrative procedures are ongoing in line with relevant laws.
The Nigerian Navy reiterated its dedication to maintaining maritime safety, enhancing surveillance, and protecting lives within Nigeria’s territorial waters.
