Nigerian Military Denies Arming Ex-Boko Haram Fighters Under Safe Corridor

The Nigerian military has strongly refuted allegations that former Boko Haram members undergoing rehabilitation are being armed to support military operations.

In  a statement issued in Abuja, the Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, Brigadier General Yusuf Ali, described the claims as false and misleading.

He said a viral video circulating online, which suggests that repentant insurgents are being equipped for combat, lacks any factual basis.

According to Ali, Operation Safe Corridor is a non-combat initiative designed to deradicalise, rehabilitate, and reintegrate former insurgents into society.

“At no stage are participants trained for or deployed in military operations,” he stated.

He clarified that the programme is strictly humanitarian and operates through collaboration among various government agencies.

Ali also noted that some reintegration initiatives at state levels are independent and not affiliated with the federal programme.

He stressed that individuals processed through such channels should not be confused with participants of Operation Safe Corridor.

The military further debunked claims regarding the location shown in the viral footage, stating that it does not match the official facility.

He explained that the designated Safe Corridor camp is located in Mallam Sidi, Gombe State, and is managed under strict security conditions.

Ali added that individuals featured in the video, including a foreign content creator, have no connection to the programme.

He explained that all participants undergo thorough screening before being admitted and are later handed over to state authorities under monitored reintegration processes.

The military said the initiative has contributed to reducing the number of active insurgents and promoting long-term peace.

Ali also highlighted the involvement of international partners, including the European Union, as evidence of the programme’s transparency and adherence to global standards.

He warned that the spread of misinformation could undermine national security efforts and weaken public confidence.

The military, however, invited credible observers and concerned individuals to visit the facility for independent verification.

“We remain committed to transparency and professionalism in executing our mandate,” he said.
