The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has dismissed reports suggesting that terrorist groups have established a colony or permanent base within the state.
Bago made the clarification on Friday during an interaction with journalists after receiving a delegation from the Niger Development Forum at the state’s liaison office in Abuja.
The delegation was led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
The governor acknowledged that some communities in Niger State have suffered attacks by armed criminals but said the situation should not be interpreted as evidence of terrorist occupation.
“There are areas being attacked, and that is a reality. However, Niger State does not have any ungoverned territory controlled by terrorists or any colony belonging to Boko Haram,” Bago said.
Niger facing cross-border security threats
The governor explained that some of the security challenges affecting the state are linked to movements of criminal elements from neighbouring areas.
He said these groups enter parts of Niger State to carry out attacks before security agencies respond.
Bago assured residents that his administration was working closely with the Federal Government of Nigeria and security agencies to improve protection of lives and property.
He said additional security deployments and joint operations were already ongoing across affected areas.
“We are strengthening collaboration with the Federal Government. With these combined efforts, we believe Niger State and Nigeria will experience greater peace,” he said.
Security concerns in Niger State
Niger State has in recent years faced attacks by bandits and armed groups, particularly in some rural communities and border areas.
The state’s large landmass and proximity to other conflict-affected regions have made security management a major concern for authorities.
Government officials have repeatedly highlighted the need for stronger intelligence gathering, improved security coordination and greater support for communities affected by attacks.
Governor rejects claims of terrorist occupation
Bago’s comments came amid public discussions about the spread of insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria.
The governor maintained that while security challenges exist, the state remains under government control and security agencies are actively responding to threats.
He urged continued cooperation between communities, government authorities and security agencies in the fight against criminal activities.
