NDLEA links Nigeria insecurity to drug trade and transnational criminal networks

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has attributed rising insecurity in Nigeria to sophisticated criminal syndicates that exploit technology, social media platforms and transnational routes to expand the illicit drug trade.

The allegation was made by the NDLEA, Oyo State Command, during a press briefing marking the 2026 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Ibadan.

The event centred on the theme: “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses.”

Speaking through the Deputy Commander, Administration and Logistics, DCN Obiajuru Okoire, the State Commander, Mr Lawal Adetula, said drug trafficking networks have evolved beyond traditional cultivation and distribution methods.

According to him, modern drug cartels now rely heavily on digital platforms, social media and cross-border logistics systems to expand their operations.

“The world is now bedevilled by sophisticated criminal networks exploiting technology, social media platforms and transnational routes to expand illicit drug trade,” he said.

Adetula warned that the growing drug menace is exposing vulnerable youths to addiction, poor health outcomes, violence and criminal activity, thereby worsening insecurity across communities.

He stressed that the drug crisis cannot be separated from broader security challenges facing the country.

The commander emphasized that tackling drug-related insecurity requires collaboration among government agencies, families, schools, religious institutions and traditional authorities.

He noted that NDLEA is strengthening its strategy through intelligence-led enforcement, rehabilitation programmes, community sensitisation and technology-driven interventions.

“Oyo State Command remains committed to a balanced approach that combines drug supply reduction with demand reduction strategies,” he said.

Also speaking, the NDLEA Zonal Commander, Mr Obaniyi Sylvester, represented by Deputy Zonal Commander Adebimpe Odewale, said illicit drug use continues to spread rapidly across communities nationwide.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and abuse.

In addition, Mr Ajanaku Toyin, Deputy Commander in charge of Counselling, Treatment and Rehabilitation, warned that many young people are being exposed to harmful drug influences through online platforms.

He expressed optimism that sustained counselling, rehabilitation and stakeholder collaboration would help curb the trend.
