The resolution of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to adopt Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives is already generating tension in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC leadership had adopted Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon Femi Gbajabiamila for the positions on Saturday, a position that was kicked against by some APC members in the National Assembly.
With late Monday adoption of Saraki and Dogara by the PDP leadership, it is expected that the APC candidates may be defeated during voting on the floor of the two chambers on Tuesday.
Because of this, President Muhammadu Buhari has scheduled a meeting with all APC Senators and Representatives on Tuesday morning before the election.
A statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, reads: “The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, will address all Senators and House of Representatives-elect of the All Progressives Congress at 9 am this morning Tuesday the 9th of June at the International Conference Centre Abuja. All concerned must endeavour to attend this meeting”.
The PDP position was taken by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) members, governors, Senators, Representatives and other chieftains after a special meeting in Abuja on Monday night.
PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement, declared after the meeting that all PDP Senators and Representatives agreed to vote for Saraki and Dogara.
