Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, is dead. He was 64.
He was said to have died at the National Hospital, Abuja on Sunday morning where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Luka Binniyat, spokesman of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), confirmed Mailafia’s death on Sunday.
The late Mailafia stirred controversy after he granted an interview accusing most top government officials and governors of sponsoring terrorism in Nigeria.
The Department of State Services, DSS, invited him for questioning many times and filed charges against him at the Federal High Court in Makurdi, Benue State.
Ever since, he never stopped lamenting the insecurity in the country. The late banker was the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2019 elections.
He was appointed deputy governor of CBN in 2005 after a stint at the African Development Bank (AfDB) as the Chief Economist responsible for Strategic Planning and Corporate Reporting.
Mailafia, who was born on December 24, 1956, in Randa, Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State, served as the deputy governor of CBN between 2005 and 2007.
From 2010 to 2015, he was the Chief of Staff (Chef de Cabinet) to the 79-member African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States based in Brussels, Belgium.
In this capacity, he was the most senior adviser to the secretary-general, overseeing the strategic management function; liaising with external partners such as the European Commission, European Parliament, European Investment Bank (EIB), UN agencies, the IMF and World Bank.
