Man arraigned for beating mother-in-law, injuring her

A lawyer, Mrs Veronica Maduekwe, on Thursday told Enugu North Magistrates’ Court her two sons threatened her life and destroyed her property worth N637, 000.

Maduekwe made this known while testifying in a suit she instituted against her two sons, Chukwudi and Oluchukwu, as well as their father for alleged unlawful and wilful damaged of her property located at 251 Ogui Road, Enugu.

She also alleged that they vandalised her jeep and a saloon car causing damages worth N256,000

The other property destroyed, she said, included office burglary proof valued N50, 000 and two metal containers valued N300,000.

The lawyer also alleged that the two sons used plastic chairs to beat her up.

“I am separated from their father long before the incident and I bought the property with my money in different names as the estate valuation agent advised me.

“My husband was a staff of Nigeria Railway Corporation and there is no way I can buy property from them using my husband’s name.

“The estate valuation agent advised me to use another name to buy the property and my husband never queried the decision.

“I am not the tenant to the property but they belong to me,” she said.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Mathew Opara, told the court that the offences contravened Sections 496, 415 and 252 of the Criminal Code of Enugu State.

The Magistrate, Mrs Linda Okibe, adjourned the matter till May 23 for further hearing.
