The Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the reported assault of one of its students at a privately owned hostel outside the university campus and announced the commencement of disciplinary proceedings against those allegedly involved.
Lagos State University disclosed this in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday and signed by Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the institution’s Centre for Information and Public Relations.
According to the statement, the incident involved students of the College of Medicine, Ikeja, and occurred at a private hostel located outside the university premises.
LASU said the affected student reported the matter to the police immediately, adding that relevant law enforcement authorities had taken appropriate action.
LASU begins internal disciplinary process
While noting that the incident occurred outside the university environment, the institution said it had commenced its own disciplinary procedures in accordance with its regulations.
“The university management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” Thomas-Onashile said.
She described assault, harassment and intimidation involving students, staff or visitors as unacceptable, stressing that such conduct conflicts with the values and principles of the university.
The university reiterated that students are expected to uphold the institution’s core values of discipline, good character and academic excellence.
University warns students against misconduct
LASU advised students to behave responsibly and avoid actions or situations that could endanger their safety or damage the reputation of the institution.
The university also encouraged students to report concerns promptly through appropriate channels rather than allowing conflicts to escalate.
Thomas-Onashile urged parents and guardians to work with the institution by supporting its disciplinary standards and encouraging their children to maintain integrity and responsible conduct.
She assured students and stakeholders that LASU remained committed to protecting the safety, welfare and academic progress of all students.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure and conducive environment for learning.
