LASCOPA Warns Lagos Residents About Adulterated Palm Oil in Markets

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has alerted residents about the rapid circulation of adulterated palm oil in markets across the state. The agency provided guidance on identifying contaminated products to safeguard public health.

Mr. Afolabi Solebo, General Manager of LASCOPA, disclosed the findings in a statement issued on Saturday, signed by Mr. Adesile Rufai, Assistant Director of Public Affairs. Investigations revealed that unscrupulous traders are selling palm oil mixed with harmful substances such as candle wax, chemicals, dyes, and other impurities, posing serious health risks.

“Consumption of adulterated palm oil can lead to food poisoning, stomach disorders, liver and tissue damage, and other long-term complications,” Solebo said. He advised consumers to check for unusual color, strong or offensive odors, excessive thickness, sediments, or any suspicious appearance when purchasing palm oil.

LASCOPA also urged buyers to patronize reputable vendors and demand safe, quality products. The agency recently sealed a shop selling contaminated palm oil along Idutafa Lane, off Oluwa Street, near Amodu Tijani Oluwa Mosque, Lagos Island.

The General Manager warned traders to immediately cease selling adulterated products or face legal sanctions under Lagos State consumer protection laws. He further encouraged the public to report suspicious products or deceptive trade practices to LASCOPA for prompt investigation.

Solebo emphasized the Lagos State Government’s commitment to **ensuring access to safe and wholesome products** and said market monitoring and consumer sensitization programs will continue throughout the state.
