Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on electricity industry stakeholders to work together to tackle persistent blackouts and establish a sustainable 24-hour power supply system across the state.

Sanwo-Olu made the appeal on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Lagos State Government to examine challenges affecting the electricity sector and develop practical measures to improve power supply.

The governor said the state government had the political commitment to introduce the reforms required to strengthen the sector and create conditions capable of attracting new investments.

He urged electricity generation and distribution companies, regulators and investors to collaborate with the government in delivering dependable power to households and businesses.

According to Sanwo-Olu, reliable electricity is essential to improving residents’ quality of life and supporting the expansion of businesses across Lagos.

“We must all put our hands on deck because a stable electricity supply is essential to the well-being of our people and the growth of our businesses.”

Minister seeks modern electricity infrastructure

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tega, said Nigeria needed to modernise its transmission infrastructure and improve system planning to establish a stronger and more efficient electricity framework.

Tega said upgrading the transmission network would help address structural problems within the power sector while providing a more reliable foundation for electricity generation and distribution.

He commended the Lagos State Government for its efforts to develop an electricity market capable of supporting economic activity and improving living standards.

The minister said Lagos had demonstrated leadership through its commitment to building a stronger electricity sector.

Lagos Assembly seeks action on power decisions

The Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy, Sabur Oluwa, said the stakeholders’ meeting had resulted in renewed commitment and specific actions aimed at strengthening Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s economic hub.

Oluwa said Lagos remained open to investors and stressed that reliable electricity would make the state more attractive to businesses and investment.

He urged stakeholders to ensure that the decisions reached at the meeting were translated into measurable action.

“Lagos is open for serious investments, but stable power supply is fundamental to unlocking the full potential of our economy,” he said.

Key stakeholders attend meeting

The meeting was attended by Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Biodun Ogunleye, and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro (SAN).

Representatives of electricity generation and distribution companies, regulators, investors and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s power sector also participated in the discussions.

The Lagos Government said continued collaboration among stakeholders would be necessary to address electricity supply challenges and create a more reliable power system capable of supporting the state’s growing population and economy.
