Residents across Lagos State are raising alarm over increasing noise pollution from religious centres, bars, workshops, and generators, citing its impact on health, productivity, and daily life.

The complaints, collected by our correspondence, highlight persistent disruptions in neighborhoods such as Abule Egba, Akoka, Bariga, Ikotun, Ladipo Market, and Surulere.

Mrs. Adewale Miracle, a home baker in Abule Egba, described the constant sound of grinding machines and generators as physically draining. “By the time one noise stops, another begins. It’s overwhelming,” she said.

University student Chinwendu Nwoke said loud music from bars and prolonged generator use made studying difficult, particularly during exam periods. Mr. Daniel Ogunleye, a secondary school teacher, noted that environmental noise also interfered with classroom concentration and teaching.

For many, sleep disruption is a growing concern. Mr. Oladipo Oladele, a civil servant in Ikotun, reported frequent interruptions from church vigils and other loud activities, leading to exhaustion and reduced productivity at work. Mrs. Kemi Adebayo, a trader at Ladipo Market, said constant noise from workshops and market activities often left her physically exhausted.

Retiree Mr. Ibrahim in Surulere highlighted health impacts, including elevated blood pressure and hearing difficulties, from continuous exposure to loud welding and machinery noise.

Speaking at the 11th Noiseless Lagos Summit hosted by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), General Manager Dr. Babatunde Ajayi warned that prolonged exposure to high noise levels can cause hearing impairment, stress, hypertension, sleep disorders, and decreased productivity.

Environmental consultant Mr. Rotimi Soremekun added that, globally, millions suffer health and productivity losses due to noise pollution, echoing concerns raised by the World Health Organization (WHO)

LASEPA has urged religious organizations, nightclub operators, and workshop owners to adopt sound control measures and comply with environmental standards, warning of sanctions for violations.
