The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed that one person died following an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Woro community, Kaiama Local Government Area
The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, involved a commercial vehicle and left a nursing mother critically injured, while her baby escaped unharmed.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Adekimi Ojo, clarified that contrary to earlier reports, only one fatality was recorded.
According to him, the deceased, a commercial driver, was killed instantly after the vehicle triggered the explosive device.
The injured woman, who was travelling with her infant, sustained severe injuries and has been taken for medical treatment.
Police authorities assured that the security situation in the area has been brought under control following the incident.
A resident, Dr Abdul Woro, said the explosive was planted along the road leading into the community and detonated as the vehicle approached.
Similarly, the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, Mr Abubakar Abdullahi, described the attack as deliberate and possibly linked to recent security operations targeting criminal networks in the area.
He disclosed that the explosion occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m., adding that the injured victim suffered serious wounds, including fractures and a head injury, and has been referred to Ilorin for further treatment.
Abdullahi also revealed that two explosive devices were reportedly planted, although only one detonated.
He suggested the incident could be a retaliatory move by suspected bandits following recent arrests of key collaborators and disruption of their logistics network.
Security agencies have since secured the area and intensified surveillance to prevent further attacks.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide useful information to assist in ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities.
