The Kebbi State Government has expressed concern over the reported emergence of a new extremist group identified as “Sai Malam”, allegedly operating within parts of the state.
The warning was issued during a security stakeholders’ meeting held in Birnin Kebbi with senior police officials and traditional leaders in attendance.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Home Affairs, Col. Hassan Riba (rtd), said the group was first noticed in the Zuru Emirate and had previously been dispersed by security forces.
He, however, warned that the group had resurfaced in other parts of the state, including Argungu, raising renewed security concerns.
Riba alleged that members of the group engage in disturbing practices, calling for urgent intervention by security agencies.
The security adviser urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and take immediate steps to prevent the group from expanding its influence.
He also stressed the importance of collaboration between security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders in addressing emerging threats.
Riba said the state government had continued to support security operations through logistics, equipment, and operational assistance.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Rilwan-Disu, represented by Deputy Inspector-General Sulaiman Abdul, called for stronger community cooperation in tackling insecurity.
He said early intelligence and timely reporting remain critical in preventing the growth of criminal or extremist networks.
According to him, security agencies are reviewing reports linked to the alleged group and will take appropriate action based on verified intelligence.
Governor Nasir Idris, represented by Permanent Secretary Kabir Adamu, said the state government had provided vehicles, motorcycles, and other equipment to support security operations.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to restoring peace and improving coordination among security agencies.
The governor also emphasized the role of traditional institutions in maintaining stability at the grassroots level.
Security stakeholders at the meeting agreed on the need for improved intelligence sharing and stronger collaboration among communities and security forces.
The police urged residents to report suspicious activities and assured that all credible intelligence would be acted upon promptly.
