The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr Olatunji Disu has called on officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to uphold professionalism and avoid actions that could tarnish the image of the institution.
Disu made the appeal during the 2026 National Police Day celebration in Abuja, themed “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”
He emphasised the need for officers to demonstrate discipline and integrity in their conduct, noting that public confidence in the police depends largely on their behaviour
The police chief stressed that misconduct and abuse of authority would not be tolerated under his leadership.
He warned that rank or position would not shield any officer found guilty of wrongdoing, adding that accountability would be applied fairly and without exception.
According to Disu, maintaining the honour of the police uniform requires a commitment to ethical standards and lawful conduct at all times.
While addressing officers nationwide, the IGP acknowledged the risks and sacrifices associated with policing duties.
He commended personnel for their dedication and bravery, stating that their contributions remain vital to national security.
However, he urged officers to rise above indiscipline and align with the values expected of a modern police force.
Disu also outlined plans to enhance the welfare, training, and operational capacity of police personnel.
He noted that a professional police institution must be supported with adequate resources, proper training, and improved working conditions.
According to him, building a respected police force requires investment in both human and operational development.
Addressing Nigerians, the IGP acknowledged concerns about the relationship between the police and the public.
He pledged to bridge the trust gap by promoting transparency, accountability, and community engagement.
Disu assured citizens that efforts are underway to build a police force that prioritises protection over intimidation and fosters cooperation with communities.
He added that the vision is to create a police institution that is more humane, disciplined, and responsive to the needs of the people.
