Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor, the Igba of Warri Kingdom, has urged the Federal Government to intervene in rising tensions in Warri, Delta State, stemming from the delineation of wards and polling units.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Friday, Lori-Ogbebor expressed concern over threats facing the Itsekiri people from neighboring ethnic groups, alleging that political interests have intensified long-standing disputes over land ownership and political representation among the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Urhobo communities.

“You may consider the term genocide harsh, but history shows that between 1997 and 2003, similar conflicts engulfed Warri,” she warned. The traditional leader highlighted that recent press activities by some groups called for opposition against the Itsekiri people, further fueling tensions.

She emphasized that the Itsekiri have historically accommodated settlers in Warri, yet disputes over lands historically belonging to them persist despite Supreme Court judgments confirming ownership. Lori-Ogbebor noted that administrative decisions, including the relocation of Ogidigben Local Government Area headquarters under former Governor James Ibori and the creation of wards without proper consultation, have deepened unrest.

“What is at stake is control and political influence in the region,” she said, stressing that failure to address these concerns could exacerbate tensions. The Igba of Warri Kingdom also renewed calls for the creation of Warri State, citing it as a pathway to enhanced representation and development for the Itsekiri people.

Chief Lori-Ogbebor urged the Federal Government to ensure compliance with court rulings on land ownership in Warri, emphasizing the importance of enforcing existing judgments to prevent further conflict and protect the rights of her community.
