The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olukayode Egbetokun has called on participants at a three-day training program to generate ideas to advance quality and timely justice delivery.
Egbetokun made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the opening of a leadership course in criminal law and civil justice.
He said the leadership course was organised by the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with Peace Building Development Consult.
The I-G was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Training and Development, Mr Frank Mba.
Egbetokun said participants of the leadership course were drawn from the Nigeria Police and other critical stakeholders in the security and justice sector.
He said the program was a collaborative initiative to bring together, selected stakeholders in the security and justice sector.
The I-G said the idea was to discus and generate new ideas to advance ongoing efforts to ensure that citizens had quality and timely access to justice in the country.
“The idea of a leadership course in criminal law and civil justice came from the daily experiences of police officers and other critical stakeholders within the law enforcement community.
“It also came from the experiences of citizens and litigants regarding extant laws as well as the practicality of the enforcement, the procedures for administering justice and the application of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
“It is our hope that the totality of these experiences, observed challenges and evaluation of how the average citizens in daily quest for justice in the country, will form part of the discussion by participants.
“The training program is expected to last for three days with active brainstorming, presentations, group works and interactions by participants”, he said.
The I-G called on participants to actively engage in the discussions, such that the program would be of immense benefit to them and the country.
In his remark, Dr Garba Abari, former Director-General, National Orientation  Agency commended the Nigeria Police for organizing the leadership course.
He said the course would enrich law enforcement agencies in the current area of constitutional democracy.
