UEFA has confirmed that it will use Hawk-Eye’s goal line technology at this summer’s UEFA Euro 2016 tournament, after the firms success at the FIFA 2014 World Cup.
The technology, which is used extensively in the English Premier League and German Bundesliga, uses seven cameras which track the ball, and sends a vibration to a device on the referee’s wrist if it crosses the goal line.
The footballing governing body announced in January that it would use goal line technology for the tournament, adding in March that this season’s Champions League and Europa League finals, in Milan and Basel respectively, would also feature the system.
Hawk-Eye was chosen after a number of different brands were trialled, and the British-based company’s technology will be installed at all 10 host stadiums in France.
In a statement, legendary referee and current UEFA chief refereeing officer, Pierluigi Collina, added: “Now, the additional assistants can focus exclusively on the control of other incidents in the penalty area, the most crucial area of the pitch.”
