Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Coach Joe Erico, said on Tuesday that the just-concluded 2012/2013 Globacom Premier League season recorded significant improvement compared to the 2011/2012 season.
Erico said in Lagos that such improvement had the capacity to boost the profile of the league.
He noted that the inclusion of home-based players in the national team were as a result of the improved performance of the teams in the league and the exceptional skills of the players.
“Well, I think it’s been very good; it’s been good this year; so far so good. I think I must be frank we are having probably if not the best run so far; for the past four seasons, or five now.
“So, and if it continues like this, I think it’s going to be good for us.
“We thank God for the present situation of the Super Eagles that they are having some home players in the national team.
“That gives the league the leverage. It’s okay; I think it is in order.“
Erico, a member of the Green Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s first ever bronze medal in the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Ethiopia, added that the sky could be the limit for home-based players.
The coach urged the League Management Company (LMC) to maximally use resources at its disposal to sustain the tempo in the 2013/2014 season.
Kano Pillars FC of Kano emerged winners of the 2012/2013 season having notched 63 points from 38 matches.
By winning the league, Pillars retained the title they won in the 2011/2012 season.
