Former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has secured the governorship ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 general election.
Adamu emerged as the party’s candidate during a special delegates congress held on Saturday in Lafia.
The former police chief replaced Musa Angba, who had earlier withdrawn from the governorship contest.
Adamu Wins Party Primary Unopposed
The chairman of the SDP electoral committee, Joseph Achile, announced Adamu as the winner after he emerged as the only candidate in the contest.
According to Achile, the former IGP received 28,637 votes from delegates representing the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nasarawa State.
He said Adamu fulfilled all requirements contained in the party’s constitution and secured the highest number of votes.
“Having met the requirements of the party constitution and scored the highest number of votes, I hereby declare Adamu as the SDP governorship candidate for Nasarawa State,” Achile announced.
Adamu Promises Better Governance
In his acceptance speech, Adamu thanked party delegates for their confidence and pledged to work towards improving governance in Nasarawa State.
He criticised what he described as poor governance challenges affecting residents and promised to focus on improving public services if elected.
The former police chief said his decision to contest was influenced by his observations during visits across different parts of the state, particularly concerns about roads and infrastructure development.
He promised that his administration would prioritise:
- Security
- Education
- Agriculture
- Employment opportunities
- Basic infrastructure
- Social services
“Nasarawa State has great potential. My administration will prioritise the welfare of our people, strengthen security and ensure that state resources work for everyone,” he said.
Former IGP Calls for Party Unity
Adamu urged SDP members to remain united as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
He said the party was positioned to provide an alternative leadership option for the people of Nasarawa State.
SDP National Chairman Endorses Candidate
The National Chairman of the SDP, Sadiq Abubakar-Gombe, congratulated the people of Nasarawa State on the emergence of Adamu as the party’s candidate.
Abubakar-Gombe praised Adamu’s record as head of the Nigeria Police Force, describing his leadership as disciplined and committed to professionalism and the rule of law.
He urged residents of Nasarawa State to support the SDP candidate in the 2027 election, describing him as capable of delivering transformation and effective leadership.
The party chairman also called on Nigerians to support SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo and other party candidates during the 2027 general elections.
SDP Begins Preparations for 2027 Elections
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the special delegates congress was attended by SDP national officials, party elders, youth representatives, women leaders and other stakeholders.
The emergence of Adamu adds another prominent figure to the growing list of political contenders preparing for the 2027 governorship contests across Nigeria.
