The historic city of Oyo witnessed a major traditional event on Saturday as Akeem Owoade officially installed Adesola Adeduntan as the new Balogun of Oyo.
The colourful installation ceremony was held at the Alaafin’s Palace and attracted traditional rulers, government officials, community leaders, dignitaries and residents of Oyo Kingdom.
Adeduntan, who previously served as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, succeeds the late Victor Olunloyo, who occupied the prestigious title until his death.
Alaafin Charges New Balogun With Greater Responsibility
During the ceremony, Oba Owoade described the Balogun title as one of the most respected traditional positions within the historic Oyo Empire.
He explained that the title has traditionally been associated with courage, leadership, protection of the kingdom and commitment to public service.
The monarch urged the new Balogun to uphold the honour attached to the position and use his experience, knowledge and influence to support the growth, peace and unity of Oyo Kingdom.
Adeduntan Pledges Commitment to Oyo Development
In his response, Adeduntan expressed appreciation to the Alaafin and the people of Oyo for the honour.
He pledged to serve with humility, integrity and dedication while contributing to the development of Oyo and the wider Yoruba community.
The new Balogun currently serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.
He is also the holder of the traditional title of Apesin Ola of Ibadanland.
Tinubu Congratulates New Balogun
President Bola Tinubu congratulated Adeduntan on the installation, describing the honour as a responsibility and a call to greater service.
The President urged him to continue promoting peace, development and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for July 18 but was postponed in honour of victims of the Oriire abduction incident.
Traditional Leaders Attend Installation
The event attracted several prominent traditional rulers, including: Rashidi Ladoja, Abdulrasheed Akanbi
Other traditional chiefs, government representatives and community leaders also attended the ceremony.
Goodwill messages from guests described Adeduntan’s installation as significant for the continued growth and unity of Oyo Kingdom.
The celebration featured traditional music, prayers and ceremonial homage from members of the Oyomesi and other palace title holders.
Meeting Between Alaafin and Olubadan Highlights Unity
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the appearance of Oba Rashidi Ladoja at the ceremony was particularly significant as it marked one of his first public visits to Oyo town since Oba Owoade became Alaafin.
The meeting between the two traditional leaders attracted attention following earlier reports of tension surrounding an incident at a public event.
However, Oba Ladoja had previously clarified that the incident was not intended as disrespect.
The latest gathering reinforced the importance of cooperation, mutual respect and unity among traditional institutions in Oyo State.
Strengthening Yoruba Traditional Institutions
While Oba Ladoja remains a prominent Ibadan traditional ruler and Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Owoade occupies the historic Alaafin throne following the traditional selection process.
The installation ceremony further demonstrated the historic connection between Oyo and Ibadan, two important centres of Yoruba culture, history and traditional authority.
Adesola Adeduntan is a Nigerian banker and business executive who served as Chief Executive Officer of First Bank of Nigeria Limited.
During his banking career, he was involved in financial sector leadership and corporate transformation.
Beyond banking, he has participated in education and community development initiatives.
