Brazil booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after edging a courageous Japan 2-1 in a pulsating Round of 32 encounter.
Japan stunned the five-time world champions by drawing first blood through K. Sano in the 29th minute before Brazil responded after the break with Casemiro leveling the score in the 56th minute.

The Samurai Blue then dug deep, defending with remarkable discipline, resilience and the indomitable warrior spirit that has become their trademark.
Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Gabriel Martinelli struck dramatically in stoppage time to break Japanese hearts and send Brazil marching into the next round. While the Seleção continue their quest for another world title, Japan has left the tournament with pride after a fearless campaign that once again showcased their growth on football’s biggest stage.
