Against all expectations, 41st-ranked Paraguay produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by eliminating 10th-ranked and four-time world champions, Germany, on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
Paraguay struck first through Julio Enciso in the 42nd minute, stunning the Germans before Kai Havertz restored parity in the 54th minute.

With neither side able to find a winner, the contest was decided from the penalty spot, where Paraguay held their nerve to triumph 4-3, sending the European giants crashing out of the tournament.
Having opened their World Cup campaign with a defeat to the United States, Paraguay have completed a remarkable turnaround and now march confidently into the Round of 16, while Germany’s quest for a fifth world title comes to an abrupt and disappointing end.
