The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to begin maintenance work on damaged expansion joints on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway starting from March 10.
The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Olayiwola Komolafe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Lagos.
According to Komolafe, the repairs will focus on the section of the bridge located on the outbound carriageway from Lagos, specifically between Chainage 5+350 and 6+115.
He explained that the project, approved by the Dave Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, will run for two weeks, beginning on March 10 and ending on March 24.
During the repair period, part of the road will be temporarily closed to traffic, resulting in reduced lane width for vehicles travelling out of Lagos.
The Ministry of Works said the maintenance is necessary to replace the worn-out expansion joints and ensure the long-term safety and durability of the bridge.
Motorists have been advised to make adequate travel plans ahead of time and consider alternative routes to minimise traffic delays.
Komolafe recommended that drivers heading from Ikorodu to Mowe Sagamu, or Ibadan should consider passing through Shimawa or Mosinmi.
For travellers leaving Lagos Island ,he suggested using the Epe corridor and continuing through Ijebu Ode to connect with Sagamu, Ibadan or Mowe.
However, he cautioned that taking a shorter route may not necessarily translate to faster travel during the maintenance period
Komolafe urged motorists to follow traffic management instructions around the construction zone and drive carefully to avoid accidents.
He also apologised for the inconvenience the temporary partial closure might cause and appealed to road users for patience and cooperation while the repairs are being carried out.
