The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to arraign several individuals accused of plotting a coup at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.
The suspects will be charged on a 13-count indictment involving allegations of treason, terrorism, and money laundering, according to court documents filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).
The case, filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), is scheduled to be heard before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
Those listed in the charge include retired Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Navy Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.
Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, is also mentioned in the case but is currently at large according to the charge.
The prosecution alleges that the defendants were involved in a conspiracy in 2025 aimed at destabilising the Nigerian government.
They are accused of attempting to undermine the authority of the President and engage in acts considered treasonable under Nigerian law.
According to the charge, the suspects allegedly had prior knowledge of a planned coup involving other individuals but failed to inform authorities or take steps to prevent it.
The Federal Government also accused some of the defendants of participating in meetings linked to activities described as terrorism-related.
In addition, the charges include allegations of providing support for terrorism and withholding intelligence that could have helped prevent such acts.
Authorities further claim that certain defendants were involved in handling funds connected to terrorism financing with sums running into millions of naira.
These financial allegations are being prosecuted under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022
The case also falls under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 reflecting the seriousness of the charges.
Prosecutors described the case as involving a coordinated network of individuals, including security personnel and civilians, allegedly working together in activities that pose a threat to national security.
The arraignment is expected to mark the beginning of legal proceedings in what could become a high-profile case with significant political and security implications.
