The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a major overhaul of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline and operational performance within the Nigeria Police Force.

The development was announced in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, who said the restructuring aligns with broader institutional reforms designed to improve oversight and efficiency.

According to Placid, the reorganisation will enhance intelligence-led monitoring, proactive inspections, and real-time supervision of police operations across commands and departments nationwide.

He explained that the revamped structure integrates key monitoring and investigative functions to better support the force’s reform agenda.

The move is expected to promote professionalism, transparency, and accountability among police personnel.

Placid added that the Monitoring Unit will now play a more active role in detecting operational shortcomings, enforcing compliance with standards, and ensuring discipline across the force.

As part of the restructuring, the IGP approved a leadership change, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the unit.

Before his appointment, Abubakar served as DCP in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State commands.

He is credited with contributing to several high-profile investigations and advancing modern policing techniques in collaboration with state authorities.

The police spokesman described Abubakar as a professional officer known for community engagement and commitment to transparency in law enforcement.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to continuous reforms aimed at building a more responsive, accountable, and citizen-focused policing system.
