A tragic accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a female passenger and leaving four others with serious injuries. The collision, involving two Toyota Sienna vehicles, took place near Iyana-Iworo.
Mr. Olawale Afolabi, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident to oir correspondence stating that the crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Both vehicles were commercial and fully loaded with passengers.
Afolabi added that the injured victims were promptly evacuated to a nearby trauma center for immediate medical attention. Preliminary investigations indicated that reckless driving by one of the Toyota Siennas caused the head-on collision between the two vehicles.
LASEMA’s Tiger Squad from the C3 Command, activated at 7:26 a.m., arrived at the scene around 8:00 a.m. to oversee rescue and recovery efforts. LASEMA officers, in coordination with the police and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), worked to secure the scene, manage traffic, and clear the wreckage.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, described the accident as preventable and urged motorists to strictly follow traffic regulations. He emphasized the need for caution on major highways, advising drivers to avoid excessive speed and dangerous overtaking. Oke-Osanyintolu also called for lane discipline and cooperation with traffic management authorities.
