The Emir of Gazargamu in Yobe State, Alhaji Ahmad Tijjani Ibn-Saleh, has passed away after a prolonged illness, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Waziri of Gazargamu, Alhaji Muhammad Baba-Kankare, in Damaturu. The Emir, a first-class traditional ruler, had been receiving medical treatment in Cairo, Egypt, prior to his death.
Gazargamu, situated in Geidam town, is renowned as the historical capital of the Kanem-Bornu Empire. The Emir was widely respected as a custodian of the emirate’s rich traditions and culture.
“The remains of the late Emir will be transported back to Nigeria for funeral rites in Damaturu, with the date and time to be announced later,” Baba-Kankare said. He also called on the public to offer prayers for the repose of the Emir’s soul.
The Gazargamu Emirate Council described the late ruler as a revered leader whose contributions strengthened the cultural and traditional heritage of the historic Ngazargamu emirate.
