The National Chairman, Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Alhaji Balarabe Musa, said the call for the creation of more states was not a fundamental issue that deserved attention in the country.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday that less attention should be given to creation of states by Nigerians.
According to Musa, Nigeria has too many serious problems; creation of more states is one of the least issues we should be talking about.
He said Nigeria was supposed to have grown and matured to certain extent that creation of states should be one of those smaller issues in the country.
“But it is now being regarded as a fundamental issue, whereas it should not have been.
“We cannot justify creation of more states simply because the ruling class is fighting among itself. There is only marginal benefit if more states are to be created.
“Nigeria has not benefited so significantly from creation of states, all we can say is that there has been centralisation.
“There is no way creation of states will uplift the dignity of persons in this country, the dignity of persons is one of the seven most important issues for a nation to progress,” Musa said.
He called on the government to give special attention to fundamental problems of democracy, employment, security and rendering public services that had impact on the dignity of the human person.
Musa flayed the proposed six years single term for the president and governors, and said, “I do not support any limitation of the term in office of public officers, what I support is empowering the electorate to decide the fate of political parties and candidates.
“Let the electorate decide through voting, in a free, fair, and transparent election who they want in office. This is more relevant to democracy,” he said.
