An Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of three men in connection with the alleged murder of former Ogun State Television broadcaster, Mrs Kitan Oyesiku, and her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo.
The defendants are Olajunwon Sodeinde, who was named as the principal suspect, Sobu Obafunsho and Shakirudeen Ayoola.
Chief Magistrate O.T. Odubanjo gave the remand order on Monday after considering an ex parte application filed by the police.
The court ordered that the defendants be kept at the Oba Correctional Centre for 60 days.
The remand is to allow time for legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The matter was adjourned until September 10 for mention.
Earlier, Police Legal Officer, Mr Saheed Abiodun, told the court that the application was dated July 6.
He said the police were seeking a 60-day remand order pending the DPP’s legal advice.
Abiodun said the application was brought under Section 306 of the Ogun State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2017, and the court’s inherent jurisdiction.
According to him, the request was supported by a 24-paragraph affidavit sworn to by an officer attached to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
He also said 17 exhibits and a written address were filed along with the application.
The police urged the court to grant the request in the interest of justice.
Oyesiku, a retired broadcaster with Ogun State Television, and her guard were found dead at her residence in Agodo, Ogun State, in June.
The victims were reportedly discovered in a pool of blood, prompting a homicide investigation by the Ogun State Police Command.
Police had earlier arrested three suspects in connection with the case after investigations linked them to the alleged crime.
The remand order means the suspects will remain in custody while prosecutors await legal advice on the next step in the case.
The alleged killing of the former broadcaster and her guard has attracted public attention in Ogun State, especially among residents, media professionals and former colleagues of the deceased.
The case is expected to return to court on September 10.
