A Federal High Court in Abujahas sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku to a total of 72 years imprisonment over a fraud case involving ₦868 million

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice James Omotosho found the former official guilty on a nine-count charge of money laundering brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

The court held that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to Nwabuoku’s conviction on all counts.

Justice Omotosho sentenced the defendant to eight years imprisonment on each of the nine counts, amounting to 72 years.

However, the court ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, meaning the terms will be served at the same time.

The judge described Nwabuoku’s actions as disturbing, noting that the funds diverted were originally allocated for security and defence while he served as Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence

He also commended the EFCC for its thorough investigation and prosecution of the case.

During the trial, evidence presented by the prosecution indicated that the defendant refunded over ₦200 million during the investigation, a claim that was not challenged by the defence.

Nwabuoku had earlier been granted bail of ₦500 million with two sureties following his arraignment in January 2025.

The EFCC accused him of committing the offences between 2019 and 2021 during his tenure at the Ministry of Defence.

The judgment marks a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption and financial crimes.
