The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled September 29, 2026, for judgment in a suit seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force to reopen investigations into the death of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Justice James Omotosho fixed the date on Thursday after listening to arguments from counsel to the applicant.
The case was filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, an NGO that is asking the court for a judicial order compelling the police to reinvestigate the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
The Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police were listed as respondents in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026.
However, none of the respondents were represented in court during the proceedings.
Counsel to the applicant, Chief Tunde Falola, adopted all written submissions and urged the court to grant the reliefs sought.
He argued that the police investigation conducted earlier did not fully address key issues surrounding the singer’s death in Lagos State on September 12, 2023.
Falola maintained that some individuals reportedly close to the deceased at the time of his death require further investigation.
The court also heard a motion from Mr Samson Obaboye, who sought to join the suit as an interested party.
Obaboye told the court he supported calls for transparency and justice in the case.
However, Justice Omotosho dismissed the application, ruling that the applicant failed to establish sufficient legal interest to be joined in the proceedings.
The applicant’s lawyer explained that the suit is a mandamus application, seeking to compel law enforcement authorities to reopen investigations into the circumstances of Mohbad’s death.
He said the organisation believes critical leads were not adequately examined during the earlier police probe.
After hearing submissions, the court adjourned the matter until September 29, 2026, for judgment.
The case continues to attract public attention as calls persist for clarity and accountability regarding the late musician’s death.
