collapsed_building_mushinA year-old baby was killed and several others injured on Tuesday when a three-storey building collapsed at Challenge Bus stop, Mushin, Lagos.

The incident happened around 2.30 p.m at No. 353, along Agege Motor Road, Challenge Bus stop, off Amu Str., Mushin in Lagos.

Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South West, spokesman, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that victims, who were injured when the building collapsed, had been rescued and taken to Mushin Hospital.

He, however, debunked claims that several lives were lost.

“A three-storey building in Mushin collapsed and killed a 12 months-old baby.

“Several other people who were injured from the impact of the blast have since been taken to the hospital.

“As at the last head count of the occupants of the building, we can safely say that no one is still trapped in the rubbles after the evacuation and rescue process was undertaken,’’ he said.

He urged landlords to subject their buildings to routine structural tests to ascertain their state of habitation.

Meanwhile, according to one of the occupants of the building, simply known as Ifeanyi , “only two victims have been rescued alive and taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH)’’.

Ifeanyi said the storey building, which was constructed in the early 60s, had not had any major renovation.

“Since the death of our landlord, Baba Jebba, his children had inherited the house,” he said.

Another occupant, who preferred to be known as Taofik, said not much effort was made to bring out more victims.

He urged the Lagos State Government to help rescue the victims trapped inside.

Spokesman of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Adebayo Kenny, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said the number of those trapped could not be ascertained.
