Babcock University in Ogun State, on Sunday, honoured Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State with its Leadership and Service Award in recognition of his outstanding performance in governance and public service.

The university honoured the governor at its 2026 convocation ceremonies.

Sanwo-Olu delivered the university’s 2026 Convocation Lecture before more than 3,400 graduating students, academics, parents and other guests.

Receiving the award, the governor described leadership as a sacred responsibility anchored on integrity, accountability and selfless service.

He said that the award would commit him further to public service.

“It is a humbling experience and another call for us to continue to serve.

“We must lead with the fear of God, understanding that people are watching us and that we are expected to provide good examples for younger generations,” he said.

Delivering the convocation lecture, Sanwo-Olu urged the graduating students to embrace opportunities, believe in Nigeria and position themselves for success in the increasingly competitive world.

According to him, his presence at the ceremony was not merely to celebrate the graduating students but also to encourage them as they prepare to begin another phase of life.

“As a leader, we need to continue to encourage young people, share our experiences with them and let them know that life is waiting for them out there,” he said.

The governor commended Babcock University for sustaining academic excellence and producing graduates who distinguished themselves in different professions and sectors.

He said that the university had maintained high standards, providing students with the knowledge and values required to succeed and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Sanwo-Olu said the graduating class, described as one of the largest in the university’s history, symbolised a new generation of Nigerians equipped to take advantage of emerging global opportunities.

He urged the graduates to face the future with confidence.

According to him, today’s youths enjoy greater access to knowledge, technology and opportunities than previous generations.

“Nearly 40 years ago when we graduated, the world was completely different. We had very little compared to what is available today,” he said.

The governor encouraged the graduates to embrace innovation, adapt to realities and leverage technology and globalisation to achieve their aspirations.

“They need to understand the world they live in. They should not give excuses or reasons why they cannot succeed.

“They should embrace opportunities before them and run with them,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu also urged the graduates to remain optimistic about Nigeria’s future, saying that the country still offered enormous prospects for innovation, enterprise and personal fulfilment.

He said that education the graduates received at Babcock University prepared them with the knowledge, skills and values required to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the entire nation.

Congratulating the graduates, the governor urged them to uphold excellence, discipline and integrity as they would pursue their careers and aspirations.
