Arsenal in contract talks with Iwobi

Arsenal are in talks to extend the contract of attacker, Alex Iwobi, Manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed.
The 19-year-old made his debut last October and has gone on to make 15 appearances in all competitions as well as breaking into the Nigeria squad at international level.
Iwobi has scored in Arsenal’s last two matches against Everton and Watford and Wenger is keen to agree fresh terms with the youngster, even though a long-term contract was signed as recently as October.
“We are discussing it (a new contract) at the moment to extend him,” Wenger said ahead of Arsenal’s match at West Ham on Saturday.
“I think that he is a real Arsenal person, he has been here since he was eight. He has three years left at the end of the season, but of course we want to keep him here for longer.
“There have been lots of positives in the last few months, he has quickly emerged and become a player with a good impact.”
Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi has quickly validated the trust placed in him by manager Arsene Wenger by scoring in consecutive league matches, and looks to have a firm place in the club’s future plans. However, the Nigerian forward might have to pause his club career, albeit briefly, at the start of next season if he’s selected to his country’s Olympic team:
“I am looking forward to the forthcoming Olympics and if I am invited, I will do my best to make a meaningful contribution,” Iwobi, who is expected to be offered a new contract. I believe that Nigeria has a crop of excellent players who are capable of doing great things at the Olympics. Coach Samson Siasia deserves a lot of praise for securing a place for the nation at the Olympics.”
The first match of the Rio Olympics starts on August 3, a mere 10 days before the start of the EPL season, and if they make it all the way to the Gold Medal match, he’ll be away from the club through August 20th. Given his recent form and selection to Nigeria’s national team, it appears safe to assume that Iwobi might be missing a healthy chunk of time during a portion of the fixture list that has, as of lately, caused Arsenal a bit of headache.
