The All Progressives Congress (APC), a newly-registered political party, has resolved to reserve its platform for governorship slot in the 2015 elections for candidates from Cross River North Senatorial District.
The party also said that its position on the matter was in realisation of the fact that it would amount to injustice to deny the Northern Senatorial District of the state the governorship slot in 2015.
Its statement was coming on heels of political permutations within the ranks of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rotate the governorship of the state based on “ the Calabar-Ogoja Accord’’.
This position was taken by the APC hierarchy shortly after its inaugural meeting in Calabar.
It stated that Cross River North had yet to occupy the governorship position in the state since the inception of the present democracy.
Chieftains of the APC and Chairmen of the three major defunct parties in the merger, Mr Hilliard Eta (ACN) Prince Terry Bisong (ANPP) and Mr.Mike Agbeh (CPC) are the main proponents of this position.
According to them the position of the APC to zone the governorship to the North was in addition to an earlier resolve of their individual parties which have fused into the new party to zone the seat to Northern Senatorial District.
Eta specifically stated: “the APC does not believe in the Ogoja/Calabar accord as held in some quarters which is whipped up to rotate the governorship of the state.
He said zoning the number one office to the North was a way of doing justice to the North that was allegedly denied the state’s gubernatorial seat since the inception of unbroken democratic governance in 1999.
Agbeh also said the APC leadership would guard against internal wrangling, but would ensure that it sacrificed for the success of the party in the state.
Bisong also said that the days of the PDP dominance in Cross River politics were over, adding that the opposition party had held sway in the governance of the state and has come back to take its place.
