The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Dr Chidi Chidebe, has resigned from his position, citing prolonged internal disagreements and unresolved challenges within the party.

Chidebe’s resignation takes effect from August 27, 2027, according to a letter he addressed to the Chairman of the PDP Interim National Working Committee.

The former state chairman said the decision followed careful consultations with his family, close associates and key stakeholders who understood the circumstances surrounding his choice.

Chidebe, who was elected chairman of the Anambra PDP during the party’s state congress on October 24, 2024, said ongoing disputes surrounding the party’s national leadership had affected his ability to effectively carry out his responsibilities.

He explained that the political atmosphere created by the prolonged internal conflicts had become increasingly difficult for state party administrators.

In his resignation letter, Chidebe said stepping down was necessary after giving the matter serious consideration and assessing what would serve both his personal wellbeing and the interest of the party.

“This has become necessary in view of the protracted internal conflicts and unresolved challenges that have characterised the party over the past one year,” Chidebe stated.

He added that his decision was made after serving to the best of his ability and believing that a peaceful transition would benefit the Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra.

Chidebe appreciates party members

The former PDP chairman expressed appreciation to God for the opportunity to serve and thanked members of the state executive committee, local government party leaders, ward executives and supporters for their cooperation during his tenure.

Chidebe described his time leading the party as a privilege, noting that the relationships, experiences and friendships developed during his service remained valuable.

He said he was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and progress of the PDP in Anambra State.

Chidi Chidebe’s leadership of Anambra PDP

Chidi Chidebe assumed leadership of the Anambra PDP chapter after emerging chairman at the party’s congress held in October 2024.

His tenure came at a period when the party was focused on strengthening its internal structures, improving unity among members and rebuilding confidence among supporters ahead of future political contests.

His resignation now creates a leadership vacuum within the Anambra opposition party as stakeholders await further decisions from the PDP leadership on the next steps.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is one of Nigeria’s major political parties and has played a significant role in the country’s democratic development since its formation in 1998.

In Anambra State, the party has experienced periods of electoral competition, internal restructuring and leadership adjustments as it seeks to strengthen its grassroots presence.

The state chapter has continued efforts to improve party unity and prepare for future elections amid changing political dynamics in the state.
