Opposition parties in Anambra State have kicked against the planned local government election in October, insisting that the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) wants to manipulate the exercise to ensure that its candidate wins the November governorship election.
Two-term governor, Peter Obi, is not seeking election but the opposition parties believe “he wants to use the council polls to put his stooges in strategic places to have a smooth outing in the November governorship election”.
To the Labour Party (LP) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Anambra electorate must be mobilised to ensure that the council poll does not hold in October.
LP and ANPP state chairmen, Sam Oraegbunam and Pat Orjiakor, said on Monday that if Obi is indeed a democratic, then the council poll should hold after the governorship election.
The last local government election in the South-East state was conducted in 1998 during the military regime.
