The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has indicated that he will soon make a decision regarding calls for him to contest the Abia State governorship election in 2027.

Kalu gave the assurance during a meeting with political leaders and community stakeholders from across his Bende Federal Constituency.

The lawmaker, currently serving his second term in the National Assembly, acknowledged the growing support urging him to enter the governorship race.

He described the backing from his constituents as genuine and encouraged them to remain patient as he considers their request.

At the gathering, community elders presented Kalu with symbolic items, including a machete and traditional girdle, representing readiness and endorsement for leadership.

Kalu expressed appreciation for the gesture, noting that similar blessings in the past had contributed to his electoral success.

While stopping short of making a formal declaration, Kalu assured supporters that he would soon announce his position.

He added that any official statement regarding his political ambition would be made in Umuahia the Abia State capital, in line with constitutional provisions

Prominent stakeholders at the event, including Dr. Madukwe Ukaegbu of the Public Complaints Commission and Prof. Hagler Okorie, praised Kalu’s performance in office.

They highlighted his leadership qualities and track record, expressing confidence in his ability to govern the state effectively.

Support groups from various communities also displayed banners and placards urging Kalu to join the race, reflecting increasing political momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers say his eventual decision could significantly shape the political landscape in Abia State.
