Players and officials of Globacom Premier League Club, Kwara United Football of Ilorin, on Monday evening escaped death on their way to Maiduguri, Borno State to honour their Premier league mid-week game against El-Kanemi Warriors.
The team and other travellers who were heading to Maiduguri were forced to make a return trip to Damaturu, the Yobe State capital as suspected gunmen were said to have been attacking people 35 kilometres to Maiduguri.
Chief Coach of Kwara United, Mr Samson Unuanel, who spoke from Damaturu, said the official car and the team bus had to return to the Yobe State capital as they could not continue their journey because of the attack.
He said at about 6.30 pm Monday, many travellers heading to Maiduguri were forced to turn back as the gunmen were operating 35 kilometres to Maiduguri.
The coach said that in the ensued confusion, his official Toyota Sienna car rammed into another vehicle and was badly damaged.
He said his players are in a tense mood following the incident.
