Segun Odegbami: NFF officials do not deserve another term, they should go

A former Captain of the senior national team, the Super Eagles, Dr. Segun Odegbami, has said that the current board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has performed poorly and do not deserve another term in office.

Odegbami, speaking on the heels of the forthcoming NFF Elections in September, said the current board members should honourably quit their respective positions if they cannot resign after the strings of setbacks recorded in the football circle.

He argued that it was dangerous that Nigeria has failed and failed, still failing while those in authorities decided to hang on and continue.

The former international said: “The only yardstick we have to measure a success or failure in football is whether you win or you qualify. I think what Nigeria should do is not to be arrogant and think everything is okay when obviously to the whole world, we have failed and we keep failing.
“The worst part is not to do anything about it and that’s why I feel something needs to give. When something is wrong, you fix it, you don’t just let it be and you are making us look like all of us don’t know what’s wrong and that things are okay. Things are not okay, things are obviously not okay, things are wrong and there are advanced football culture. You saw what happened in Italy, people resigned on their own because they accepted that they have failed. We should have things like that, if they are not going to resign, they should not come back to same office. If they do, we are doomed”.

It could be recalled that Nigeria failed to pick a ticket to the forthcoming FIFA World Cup Football competition even with 10 African countries expected to file out in a 48-team format.

The age grade teams are also not doing good with strings of failures as the country has not qualified for the finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the past three editions. Other age grade teams are not better as the football authorities pay attention to only the Super Eagles while the age grade teams suffer.
