Xenophobic attacks: Gani Adams visits South Africa

National Coordinator of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) and founder of Odua Progressive Union (OPU), Otunba Gani Adams, was guest of the Nigerian Embassy in South Africa on Thursday in a solidarity visit to Nigerians over the spate of xenophobic attacks in the country.
The Ambassador at the Consulate General of Nigeria, Mrs Uche Ajulu-Okeke, was on ground to welcome Adams’ entourage to the country.
In her opening remarks, she narrated the genesis of xenophobia, especially after the post apartheid era which led to the hate of foreigners and the eventual violent attacks.
She revealed that some Nigerians were target of attacks and had their businesses disrupted.
She informed Adams that the embassy had dedicated the Old Embassy building as a camp for Nigerians to seek refuge in case of any threat or danger.
The OPC leader commended the embassy for its protectiveness since the unwarranted attack on foreigners, expressing concern that the South African government owes it a duty to protect lives and property of foreigners.
The ambassador and Adams later addressed some Nigerians, assuring them that the mission is doing everything it can to ensure their safety.
Adams promised to propose to the Nigerian government the need to make additional laws that will further protect Nigerians who have legitimate reasons to be outside their country for legitimate businesses.
He promised to sensitise the Nigerian government and Nigerians of the need to come to the aid of Nigerians affected by xenophobia while expressing his willingness to be of support to the Mission and Nigerians in any capacity that his assistance may be required.
He thanked the Ambassador for her warm hospitality and the good work she is doing which, he said, is even being noticed in Nigeria.
The interaction was attended by the Executive members of the Nigeria Union in South Africa, cross section of Nigerians and members of the Nigeria Mission in the Southern African country.
