Although Nigeria failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country’s football influence will still be evident on the biggest stage of world football for some reasons.
A total of 14 players of Nigerian descent are expected to represent eight different countries at the tournament, underlining Nigeria’s vast contribution to global football talent development and the growing impact of its diaspora across international football.
While the Super Eagles will watch from the sidelines, these players — many of whom were eligible to represent Nigeria at various stages of their careers — will be carrying their adopted national colours into football’s most prestigious competition.
Among the standout names is France winger Michael Olise, one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents. Austria will rely on the experience of captain David Alaba, while England’s squad is expected to feature stars such as Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.
Germany’s challenge will include the creativity of Jamal Musiala and the midfield presence of Felix Nmecha. Switzerland could feature defenders and forwards with Nigerian roots, including Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor.
The United States is expected to be represented by striker Folarin Balogun, while Canada’s growing football project includes Nigerian-descended talents Tani Oluwaseyi and Promise David.
South Africa could also have representation through defender Ime Okon, while Austria’s squad may include midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka should he feature in their final plans.
