WBC eyes special belt for Pacquiao-Mayweather bout

Sanctioning body, World Boxing Council (WBC), is planning to create a special belt just for the highly anticipated May 2 mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, confirmed to Boxing Scene that a “very special, exquisite belt” will be awarded to the winner of the showdown that will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the United States (U.S.).
“For this special recognition, I would like to have emeralds or platinum,” said Sulaiman. “But everything will be defined during the next few weeks.”
“This is because of the magnitude of the event, which will be broadcast via TV networks globally,” he added.
The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight was finally announced last week after more than half a decade of waiting, and some believe that the bout is unlikely to live up to the hype because both fighters are past their primes.
But Sulaiman disagreed, saying the fight “came in a good moment.”
“It will be an emotive event,” he said. “Both are obviously putting their legacy at stake, to prove who’s the best, satisfying an enormous exceptance.”
“They are also competing to be considered one of the best 10 fighters in the entire boxing history,” Sulaiman added.
