Former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, has condemned the recent violence in Plateau State, just as he expressed deep sadness over the recent incidents.
Wase described the latest violence as “not only affronts to our shared humanity, but also direct threats to the peace and harmonious coexistence that are being rebuilt and strengthened across Plateau State.:
The former Deputy Speaker who reacted to the incidents in a statement he personally signed, said, “I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the recent incidents of violence in some parts of Plateau State, the latest of which followed the senseless killings that occurred in Angwan Rukuba, on Sunday, March 29, 2026. According to reports, some unidentified gunmen attacked the community, causing multiple deaths. This latest senseless attack and the numerous others are not only affronts to our shared humanity, but also direct threats to the peace and harmonious coexistence that are being rebuilt and strengthened across Plateau State.
He added, “I unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms this latest incident in Angwan Rukuba, including the reported reprisal attacks in some parts of the Jos North, which have also caused the loss of lives, while some people are said to be missing.
The former Deputy Speaker said used “this opportunity to strongly condemn the several other incidents of violence in numerous other communities across our dear state. These highly troubling incidents include the absurd killings in February this year in Zurak and Sabon Gari communities in Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, leading to the loss of at least four lives and injuries to many others; the attacks on some soldiers and residents in Garga community in Kanam Local Government Area; the killing of four traders who were said to have been ambushed and killed on their way to a market in Pankshin; and the reported coordinated killings of 10 people in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas by yet to be identified gunmen.
“I am further disheartened that these dastardly acts continued last month with six residents murdered in Miango in Bassa Local Government Area; the highly provocative killing, on the 14th of that month, of 12 soldiers and eight vigilantes in an ambush at Wanka community in Kanam Local Government Area; and several other reported incidents that have persisted in our dear state over time in various communities in Wase Local Government Area, especially within Bashar District.
“I condemn all forms of violence, regardless of the perpetrators or their motivation. Such acts are against humanity and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
“I hasten to extend my deepest sympathy to the victims, their families, and all those affected by all the heinous atrocities across Plateau State.
Addressing efforts by governments so far, Wase said he “would like to commend the swift response of the Federal and Plateau State Governments, as well as security agencies on the latest incidents in Jos North LGA in deploying personnel to the area to restore order and protect lives. The immediate steps taken by His Excellency Governor Caleb Mutfwang to impose a curfew and initiate investigation into the causes of the latest violence are timely and commendable.
He also appealed ” for continued vigilance to secure not only Jos North but our entire state. It is obvious that the security situation across the entire state requires a more decisive and sustained effort. I urge the relevant security agencies to rededicate themselves and act decisively to identify and prosecute those behind all forms of violence across the state, ensuring that justice is seen to be done.
‘I would also like to urge all citizens of Plateau State and other residents, religious and community leaders, as well as other stakeholders to remain calm and exercise maximum restraint during this period. We must not allow anger to provoke retaliatory actions that will only deepen the various crises and escalate tension in our dear state. I want to emphasises that residents should allow security agencies to do their work and to provide actionable intelligence that will help foster lasting peace across the entire state.
“We should always remember that violence has no place in a sane society, and that dialogue, justice and the rule of law remain the only pathways to building a peaceful and progressive Plateau State.
“Once again, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of all those affected by the series of violence in Plateau State”, the statement concluded.
