UPN registration: Fasheun explains delay

fredrick_fasehunThe proposed Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) said on Sunday that it would take a longer period for it to meet the registration requirements of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),

The Founder of the UPN, Dr Frederick Fasheun, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos while reacting to the delay by INEC in the registration of the party.

“The UPN is very much on ground. If INEC was not going to register the party, it would not have collected one million naira from us.

“They would also not have issued us a receipt.

“All we need to do now is to fulfil their conditions and you cannot fulfil those conditions in just one hour,” Fasheun said.

He added that if the group was eventually registered, it would introduce `pervasive democracy’ to the people.

“We don’t want to introduce Lagos or Abuja democracy to the people, but a pervasive democracy that takes time,” Fasheun said.

The party leader said the new UPN believed in the four cardinal points, as enunciated by late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, “and as a dynamic platform, it will seek to improve upon them, to enable Nigerians to cope adequately with the challenges of today”.

He said the party would also enunciate “social justice, a fair democracy, free purposeful education at all levels and mass housing, among others”.
