UNN cancels witchcraft conference

UNN

University of Nigeria Nsukka,  UNN, has at last heeded to the call by the  Christian Association of Nigeria,  CAN, to cancel the  controversial international conference on witchcraft proposed for November 26 and November 27 by the B.I.C Ijomah Centre for Policy and Research at the university.
It was not only CAN that objected to the  holding of  the proposed  conference but  students, lecturers and alumni also disagreed on the programme.
They held special prayers within and outside the campus against what had been described in some quarters as “the work of the agents of darkness.”
To save the situation,  the Vice -Chancellor,  Professor Charlie Igwe, on Monday, ordered the immediate cancellation of the conference.
In a statement by the Acting Public Relations Officer, PRO, Okwun Omeaku, the Vice-Chancellor said the cancellation is in response to the yearnings of the public.
The statement reads: “This is to inform the university community in particular and general public that the Vice- Chancellor, Prof Charles Igwe has directed that the TOPIC for the Interdisciplinary and International Seminar…be dropped forthwith”.
“This is in response to the yearnings of the public that have erroneously misconstrued the ideas behind the choice of the topic, and a true demonstration of Management with a listening ear. Other aspects of the programme will run its full course,” it stated.
It could be recalled that students and staff of the University had  held several protests both online and hard copy criticizing the conference.
calling for its cancellation.
