A new skipper is expected to captain the Super Eagles in Nigeria’s Unity Cup opener against Zimbabwe today in London, England.
This is because substantive and assistant captains respectively Wilfred Ndidi and Moses Simon are yet to report to camp.
Francis Uzoho emerged as one of the leading candidates for the role as the goalkeeper remains a long-serving member of the squad, having made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2017.
Speaking during Nigeria’s pre-match press conference in London yesterday, Uzoho said after representing the country for a long time, it would be a great privilege to wear the captain’s armband if the coach selects him.
After the presser, the Eagles headed straight to the training pitch in London for their third workout, with coach Eric Chelle putting 19 players through their paces.
Nigeria’s first semi-final matchup against Zimbabwe kicks off at 7:30PM at Charlton Athletics’ stadium, the Valley.
India and Jamaica will battle it out tomorrow in the second Semifinal while the championship match comes up on 30 May 2026.
