Wife of Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi, has commended the Federal Government for introducing the school feeding programme in primary schools in the country.
She also commended the Enugu State Government for ensuring that children of the state were among the beneficiaries of the programme describing it as , “a clear demonstration of good governance and a state with a vision to make health interventions and education accessible, affordable and qualitative”.
Mrs Ugwuanyi, who gave the commendation during the flag-off of the de-worming exercise for children between 0 -5years , held in Enugu, stated that the home grown feeding programme ,was designed to improve child nutrition and health, increase school enrolment, create employment opportunities and strengthen local agricultural economies.
Speaking , the state programme manager, of the Home Grown feeding programme, Mr. Ifeanyi Onah, attributed the success of the programme to the pragmatic and proactive leadership of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi , whom he described as “the man who saw tomorrow”.
He disclosed that the programme which started in Enugu State, three years ago in 2016, had about 2,230 cooks feeding about 194,707 pupils.
Onah added ; that Enugu State was among the first states that joined the exercise in 2016.
Earlier in his address, Commissioner for Health, Prof. Anthony Ugochukwu, highlighted the remarkable contributions of Governor Ugwuanyi and his wife, towards delivering healthcare services to the people of the state, especially the children and l the less privileged.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health,, Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, the commissioner noted that Mrs. Ugwuanyi’s pet project, Ugo Touch of Life Foundation (U-TOLF) has continued to provide free medical treatment for vulnerable groups and empower the less privileged in the state.
He added that the foundation has also provided cancer screening machines for hospitals across the three senatorial districts of the state, stating that the de-worming exercise was one of her other numerous achievements.
The commissioner assured of his ministry’s commitment to the success of the programmes of the state government urging the people to always avail themselves of opportunities provided by the state government to take care of the health challenges of the people .
The de-worming programme was for 0-5 years old children.
The exercise was organised by the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, in collaboration with the Enugu State Government.
