Two Faiths, One Nation: Orji Kalu urges unity as Lent and Ramadan begin

As Christians begin the solemn season of Lent and Muslims embark on the sacred month of Ramadan, former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on Nigerians to embrace the rare spiritual convergence as a powerful symbol of unity and collective renewal.

In a message released from Kalu’s Media Office and signed by George Maduka at the commencement of both holy observances on Wednesday, the Senator described the simultaneous start of Lent and Ramadan as “a divine reminder that beyond our different modes of worship, we share the same moral foundations; faith in God, sacrifice for a higher purpose, compassion for humanity, and hope for a better nation.”

According to him, Lent invites Christians into a period of reflection, repentance, fasting and deeper devotion, while Ramadan calls Muslims to fasting, prayer, charity, and spiritual discipline. He noted that although the practices may differ, the essence remains the same: self-restraint, generosity to the needy, reconciliation with one another, and commitment to righteous living.

Kalu, a devout Catholic, urged Christians and Muslims to use this sacred season not only for personal spiritual growth but also to pray fervently for peace, stability, and progress in Nigeria. “Our strength as a nation lies in our ability to work together across religious and ethnic lines,” he stated.

He further encouraged religious leaders to continue promoting messages of tolerance, mutual respect, and national cohesion, reminding Nigerians that faith must translate into good character, justice, and service to humanity.
