Traditional rulers need constitutional roles – Ademiluyi

A traditional ruler in Osun, Oba Adeboye Ademiluyi, the Osinlade of Osi-Okero in Ile-Ife, says constitutional roles for traditional rulers would help promote grassroots development.

Ademiluyi gave the advice on Wednesday during his coronation ceremony in Osi-Okero, Ile-Ife, Osun.

He said traditional institutions play a significant role in communicating government policies and programmes to their subjects.

He said these institutions must be strengthened against undue influence from elected officials.

According to him, traditional rulers should be part of government at all levels. They act as law enforcers and play key roles in implementing government policies and programmes.

“I am one of those clamouring for traditional rulers to be recognised in the constitution, particularly in the House of Chiefs, which I believe is beneficial.

“Also, in any election in Nigeria, politics is involved. Politicians must engage with traditional rulers, who represent both the government and their subjects,” Ademiluyi said.

He praised the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, for making him king in the ancient town of Osi-Okero. He assured his subjects he would not disappoint them.

Ademiluyi urged all stakeholders to support the inclusion of traditional rulers in governance through constitutional provisions.
